Over the last few years we have adapted to a new style of dining, with the rise of street food concepts and menus designed for sharing. Diners have become more adventurous to try new flavours and are willing to share dishes in a relaxed style of eating that builds relationships between guests.

While taste and presentation are essential for an overall great dining experience, there’s more than taste that brings food to life to catapult it into an unforgettable experience.
Nowhere is that more obvious than in the tradition of Spanish tapas: festive appetizers enjoyed with drinks, and always focused on togetherness and sharing
WHAT ARE SMALL PLATES?
While the small plate trend might be new to you, the tradition actually dates back over a century.
What are today called small plates are derived from the tapas tradition of Spain. As early as the 1800s, tapas were served to travelers from the kitchens of local inns. The innkeepers would offer various offerings from their kitchen, served in small portions. They would sometimes be served on a “tapa” or pot cover, which is where this style of cuisine takes its name.
Over time, the tradition of small plates evolved. It became common for diners to create a meal out of various small servings in the Spanish style. These days, the tapas style is employed globally, with various different types of cuisines. At Elicit Bar & Lounge, our small plates are globally inspired, and include American classics as well as Asian-inspired specialties.
WHAT ARE SMALL PLATES?
While the small plate trend might be new to you, the tradition actually dates back over a century.
What are today called small plates are derived from the tapas tradition of Spain. As early as the 1800s, tapas were served to travelers from the kitchens of local inns. The innkeepers would offer various offerings from their kitchen, served in small portions. They would sometimes be served on a “tapa” or pot cover, which is where this style of cuisine takes its name.
This folding salon chair made of rich rosewood; canvas and leather seat and back, with a folding side-tray is an outstanding example of Victorian campaign design. It was popularly used to furnish railway Salon cars of Indian Maharajas.

The hunt territory crossed multiple property lines and for most of the time we were at such a distance from the first and second fields we didn’t see the hounds. At one point we heard a loud human cry of a word I couldn’t discern. A redheaded middle schooler’s eyes shined bright, “They spotted a fox!” The hounds chorused loud and echoey–we couldn’t see them, but their song reached us nonetheless.
I felt transported in time for a moment as we sat quietly on our steeds, listening to the pack in pursuit. At dinner the night before we had talked about how the Civil War was fought on this land. I was not being pursued, but I had an eerie sense of what that might have been like to be a soldier on horseback, hiding out in the woods, listening for the enemy. And how truly quiet you’d have to be as the undulating land and various groves somehow seemed to amplify sound.
We ended the hunt unceremoniously and grabbed water bottles out of a trailer of some grandfatherly gentleman who had planned ahead better than us. Our next stop after taking the horses home, getting them settled, and cleaning up was the Virginia Fall Races. Amy and I were going to make the most of every horsey touristy equestrian getaway opportunity that was available to us! I debuted my green fox dress from Modcloth for the occasion.
Our host informed us parking would be at a premium and we should follow her into the town in our rental and then pile into her truck as she had a parking pass for the event. We met a friend of hers, presumably also making the most of limited parking, a retired diplomat who was a former polo player.

Trunk Shows special events
Quick overview… A typical trunk show is when the fashion designer or vendor brings their line to a boutique for a special in-shop showing for the store’s customers (the items used to be carried in a trunk, thus the name). Generally, but not always, accessories vendors bring stock pieces they can sell during the event while clothing vendors bring samples, take orders, and ship the items later (usually 4 – 8 weeks out). A show can be from 2 hours long to all afternoon, depending on the boutique, the designer, their wants and needs, and their relationship.
Designers starting with a new store is 2 – 3 hours.
If you’re bringing samples (rather than inventory), be sure the samples are the same fit and quality that you’ll later ship the customer. Make sure everyone’s very clear with what date you promise to deliver the merchandise – DO NOT promise something you cannot fulfill. You will lose your credibility and if you’re late, the customer will have the option of canceling the order completely – ouch!
How do the store’s customers pay?
If you are selling from stock, obviously customers pay at the show and take their merchandise right away. If you’re showing samples for future delivery, boutiques generally ask the customer to pay in full when the order is placed. Sometimes, boutiques ask the customer for half up front and half when the merchandise arrives.
Who sets the prices at the trunk show?
It is the shop owner’s decision what retail price the consumer is charged. The shop will pay you the wholesale price for each piece they sell.
A trunk show is an event in which vendors present merchandise directly to store personnel or customers at a retail location or another venue such as a hotel room. In many cases it allows store personnel to preview and/or purchase merchandise before it is made available to the public.

The return of the luxury trunk show
Designers are embracing the trunk show model to connect with customers help predict sales demand and break free from the Instagram crowds.
Digital platforms including Instagram may be the latest way to herald designers’ new collections, but the tried-and-true trunk show continues to provide healthy sales for designers willing to hit the road.
“There’s much more profit and fewer returns,” said Zang Toi, who has been holding trunk shows in conjunction with retail partners for 32 years. “It helps build a solid business.” Designers including Jonathan Cohen and Badgley Mischka and retailers such as Moda Operandi and Saks also use the trunk show model to build closer relationships with customers; set the tone for demand for a collection through early sales; encourage loyalty; and reduce the number of returns since customers can try on the designs.
While runway images can be intimidating for clients, designers can ease those fears by showing how the clothes are worn. They can also adjust prices based on demand.
