2024 reporting indicates that Tesla will deliver over two million (2M) vehicles. Potentially, near the end of 2024 over three million (3M) Tesla advanced vehicles equipment camera suiites. could be used for surveillance. In-motion and Motionless 24/7/365 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year surveillance capabilities, all over the world.

Protecting and respecting the privacy of people who drive and ride in their cars and the people outside their cars who might be recorded by the cars outward-facing cameras (for the record, all cars with outward facing cameras are a privacy concern, no matter who makes them, not just Tesla).

In April, 2023, Reuters reported stories from a number of former Tesla employees that videos taken from cameras in Tesla’s were regularly shared over internal chat systems within the company.
The content shared included videos of children, nudity, sensitive personal possessions and more. The claims were so egregious that US lawmakers demand answers from Tesla on what was going on and what they were doing to stop this privacy-violating behavior.The report was also followed by a class-action lawsuit from a Tesla driver for violating their privacy. This all came on the heels of US consumer watchdog Consumer Reports raising concerns about Tesla’s use of cameras in their cars back in 2021.

Tesla’s privacy notice (abstract/sub-section):

Tesla’s full privacy notice says they can collect a good amount of data on you. Everything from your name, address, email, to lots of data about your car and your use of your car, when and where you charge your car, infotainment system data, Tesla mobile app data, Autopilot data (which they define as “Vehicle equipped camera suite that provides advanced features such as Autopilot, Smart Summon, and Autopark”).

There is some good here. Tesla does say that some of this data — things like your phone contacts and messages, dashcam video, and sentry mode data from external sensors and cameras — is processed locally on the car and not shared with Tesla.

However, note that cabin camera videos (those are the cameras pointed at your face), can be shared with Tesla if you enable data sharing.

Tesla makes other promises in their privacy that sound quite good. They say they won’t share your personal information with third parties for their own use unless you opt-in (don’t opt-in!).

They say they don’t “associate the vehicle data generated by your driving with your identity or account by default.” They say they your location data is “either processed directly without leaving your vehicle, is in a form that does not personally identify you, or remains inaccessible to Tesla.” These things are all good.

However, they also say in their privacy policy, “Tesla vehicles are equipped with a camera suite designed from the ground up to protect your privacy while providing advanced features such as Autopilot, Smart Summon, and Autopark.” And we know it has been reported that images and videos from Tesla’s were being shared by employees internally with little regard for privacy, so we worry that Tesla doesn’t always honor all the privacy promises they make.

Tesla Content:

Vehicle Equipped Camera Suite operates in two (2) completely distinctly and dramatic different modes. First mode is Dashcam when the vehicle is in-motion. The second is in Sentry mode when the vehicle is not in motion, Parked. These are very important different modes with completely different functionality and settings.

Dashcam Tesla Content:

Depending on market region, vehicle configuration, options purchased, and software version, your vehicle may not be equipped with Dashcam or the features may not operate exactly as described. It is your sole responsibility to consult and comply with all local regulations and property restrictions regarding the use of cameras.

Dashcam records video footage of your vehicle’s surroundings when driving Model 3.

Use Dashcam to record driving incidents or other notable events, like you would for an external dashcam on other vehicles.

The Dashcam icon is located in the app launcher. You can add the Dashcam app to the bottom bar for easy access (see Customizing My Apps). When Model 3 is in Park, touching the Dashcam icon displays the Viewer (see Viewing Video Recordings).

To protect your privacy, video recordings are saved locally to a formatted USB flash drive’s onboard memory.
Recordings are not sent to Tesla. Model 3 does not record videos when Dashcam is Off.

Sentry Mode

Depending on market region, vehicle configuration, options purchased, and software version, your vehicle may not be equipped with Sentry Mode or the features may not operate exactly as described.

It is your sole responsibility to consult and comply with all local regulations and property restrictions regarding the use of cameras.

When enabled, your vehicle’s cameras and sensors (if equipped) remain powered on and ready to record suspicious activity around your vehicle when Model 3 is locked and in Park.

Think of Sentry Mode as an intelligent vehicle security system that alerts you when it detects possible threats nearby.

If a threat is detected, Sentry Mode pulses the headlights, sounds the alarm, and displays a message on the touchscreen indicating that the cameras may be recording to inform individuals outside of the vehicle. You will receive an alert on your phone through the mobile app and footage of the event is saved to USB drive (if installed).

Sentry Mode is disabled by default. You can use voice commands or the Tesla mobile app to easily enable or disable Sentry Mode.

To enable Sentry Mode using voice commands, say “Keep Tesla safe,” “Keep my car safe,” “Sentry on,” or “Enable Sentry” (see Voice Commands).

For some vehicles manufactured after approximately November 1, 2021, the center console USB ports may only support charging devices. Use the USB port inside the glove box for all other functions.

Sentry Mode requires your Battery to be at least 20% charged. If the Battery falls below 20%, Sentry Mode turns off and the mobile app sends you a notification. Power consumption may increase when Sentry Mode is active.

When Sentry Mode is enabled, the Security Alarm settings (Controls > Safety > Security Alarm) are not available.

Do not rely on Sentry Mode to protect Model 3 from all possible security threats. Sentry Mode uses many factors to determine whether to activate the security alarm. All impacts may not be detected and the alarm may not activate in all situations. While it may help deter some threats, no security system can prevent all attacks.

How to Use Sentry Mode (Camera + App)
Sentry Mode requires a properly formatted USB drive inserted in your vehicle’s USB port (Tesla recommends using the glovebox USB port, if equipped) to store and retrieve footage.

Vehicles manufactured from approximately 2020 are equipped with a pre-formatted USB drive in the glove box. There are two ways to format the USB drive:
Insert the USB drive into the USB port and navigate to Controls > Safety > Format USB Drive. Your vehicle automatically formats the USB drive for you.

Format the USB drive on a computer
See USB Drive Requirements for Recording Videos for more information.

Insert the USB drive into the vehicle’s USB port.
With your vehicle in Park, enable Dashcam by navigating to Controls > Safety > Dashcam.
Touch Controls > Safety > Sentry Mode > On. Once enabled, the Sentry Mode icon in the Controls tab turns red.

Rear camera recordings are available only on vehicles manufactured after approximately February 2018.
When enabled, Sentry Mode is idle, ready to sound the alarm and save a recording of the security event if triggered. See Viewing Video Recordings for information on viewing footage.

To silence the security alarm and audio system when the alarm is triggered, navigate to Controls > Safety > Disable Sentry Sounds. When enabled, Sentry Mode still sends a notification through the mobile app and saves the last 10 minutes footage.

To manually enable/disable Sentry Mode until the next drive, touch the Sentry Mode icon in Controls. Sentry Mode is Off when the icon is no longer red.

How to Use Sentry Mode (App Only)
When Sentry mode is enabled and a security event is detected but without a USB drive plugged into a USB port, your vehicle alerts you through the mobile app, without any camera recordings.

Exclude specific locations
In Controls > Safety > Sentry Mode, you can determine if you want Sentry Mode to not enable in certain locations (see Home, Work, and Favorite Destinations for more information):

Exclude Home: Sentry Mode does not automatically enable at the location set as Home in your Favorites list.

Exclude Work: Sentry Mode does not automatically enable at the location set as Work in your Favorites list.

Exclude Favorites: Sentry Mode does not automatically enable at any location in your Favorites list.

To recognize a location listed as Home, Work, or a Favorite, Model 3 must be parked within approximately 1,640 feet (500 meters) of the saved location.

To set up your Home or Work location, touch Navigate > Set Home/Set Work. To set up a Favorite, touch the star when viewing an address on the map. Manually turning Sentry Mode on or off using the touchscreen or the mobile app overrides your Home, Work, or Fa

Sentry’s Live Cam
In late October 2021, Tesla released an update that added Live Cam to Sentry Mode.

With Live Cam, you can stream the car’s live video footage to your phone via the Tesla app — one camera at a time — effectively turning the vehicle into a mobile surveillance solution.

Live Cam offers views of the car’s front, sides, and back. In mid-Decmeber 2022, Tesla added access to the car’s inside cam below the review mirror.

Other than viewing live images, Sentry’s Live Cam feature allows you to honk (or make fart sounds — a practical joke built-in all Tesla), flash the headlights, or even broadcast a voice message to the car’s outside speakers from wherever you’re in the world. It’s the ultimate “hey, I see you” add-on feature.

Tesla Computers:

Teslas newest revision of their car computer, called Hardware 4. The car computer actually consists of two separate computers: the Full Self Driving (FSD) Computer and the digital cockpit computer. Both are housed in the casing.

The FSD computer is used for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and Autopilot. It processes sensor information and if necessary steers the car.
The digital cockpit computer powers the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The computers are liquid cooled.

Full Self Driving Computer
The general layout of the Full Self Driving Computer didn’t change from Hardware 3 to 4. One half of the board serves as redundancy for the other half. The two biggest chips on the left and right center are identical Full Self Driving System-on-Chips designed by Tesla in cooperation with Samsung. They contain a Central Processing Unit, Graphics Processing Unit, Neural Processing Unit, Image Signal Processor, H.265 Encoder. According to twitter user green its CPU has now 20 (up from 12) A72 cores. According to the part number printed on the RAM chips, the SoC now uses GDDR6 instead of LPDDR4 memory. This provides over five times the bandwidth from which the Neural Processing Unit inside the SoC should benefit the most.

Tesla has begun shipping Model Y cars that are equipped with its Hardware 4 self-driving technology package, according to Twitter user The Kilowatts (a former Tesla employee). Supposedly, the new hardware, known informally as HW4, uses sideview cameras that are larger and have a distinctive red tint to their lenses. The forward-looking cameras are also upgraded. HW4 first appeared on Model S and Model X vehicles earlier this year.

Tesla HW4 & FSD
The upgraded HW4 package can be spotted by looking closely at the exterior of a Tesla vehicle. Look for the telltale red color in the camera lens. Preliminary reports suggest the new lenses cannot be retrofitted to existing cars, even though the mounting points in the sheet metal are the same. Even if such a thing was possible, it is likely there are changes to the software that would not work on cars manufactured before the date when HW4 was incorporated on the production line.

Cybertruck Demographics, reportedly:

When broken down by income, a little over 30% of those with a household income of $75,000 or higher, and who currently own a pickup truck, said that they are likely to purchase a Cybertruck, versus just 21% percent of households in the lower demographic.

Tesla is a luxury brand, associated more with indulgence than functionality. This calls into question the company’s motivation for entering a marketplace that appears a few steps removed from its established customer base.

To evaluate the marketplace for the Cybertruck, GLG identified a panel of current pickup truck owners and asked them about their sentiments regarding Tesla’s offering. We also leveraged GLG’s best-in-class expert network, partnering with our Network Member, Tom Croskey, the former Executive Director Manufacturing Strategy and Planning at General Motors, to help put the survey data in context.

While Tesla’s strong 4Q19 production and delivery number helped regain some investor confidence (TSLA market value above $100 billion), bearish investors would likely point to the company’s inconsistent execution historically; therefore with three new vehicles (Model Y, Cybertruck and Roadster) in the pipeline, it will be interesting to see how quickly Tesla can bring the Cybertruck to market.

Tesla’s new retail strategy

Reportly, Tesla is implementing a more fully baked plan.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Tesla will close some retail locations, but it will not result in a smaller retail workforce.

As we recently reported, Tesla is actually on a salesforce hiring spree right now.

The new strategy will see Tesla letting go of most of its high-rent locations in malls and shopping districts in favor of delivery centers.

Much like original plan to focus on online sales, Tesla plans to have a large part of its retail workforce work remotely with people placing orders online.

Currently, when someone places an order for a Tesla vehicle online, the customer is assigned a “Tesla Advisor” at their local store to help manage the process leading up to the delivery.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the automaker found no reason for those employees to work at a specific store.

In the case that an award is made, it may result in the reduction of another award by the Office of Financial Aid to avoid “over-awarding.” Please consider your actual level of need when applying.

The funds are called Endowed Scholarships because most are funded with an initial contribution in excess of $100,000 and awards are made using the interest earned from these funds. This method of giving ensures that funds will never run out, but will be available to continue supporting students’ education for decades to come. REMEMBERING BILL SCOTT 1938 – 2009

Bill Scott, 71, owner of Summit Point Motorsports Park and BSR Inc. in West Virginia, passed away December 7, 2009.

Bill Scott was a national champion whose racing credentials reached deep into the European racing world. Bill raced mostly Formula V and Porsche, but he also raced a Camaro in Trans-Am races with team mate David Hobbs, and RX7’s in IMSA. He helped team-mate George Alderman win an IMSA championship by co-driving a Gremlin to a class win in the 1972 Daytona 24-hour race.

A racer’s career is short-lived. Bill had a vision to train drivers in the skills that he learned from racing. His life-saving accident avoidance training classes put him in first place on the road to success. One of the lessons Bill learned from racing is the importance of teamwork, of “putting a team together that is dedicated, enthusiastic, and willing to put up with hard times.” He has established that team in the family members and dedicated employees who carry on his legacy at Summit Point.

In 1980, Bill Scott purchased the ailing Summit Point Raceway. He supported racing and sports car performance events with a passion. His company, Bill Scott Racing [BSR], trained thousands of drivers from private security agencies to government agencies (U.S. Air Force, CIA, State Department, state police, etc.) in accident avoidance techniques from defensive driving to counter-terrorism tactics.

Under Bill’s leadership, Summit Point expanded with the addition of two new road courses [Jefferson in 1996 and Shenandoah in 2004], a triple skid pad complex [Washington in early 2009], and a new 13-acre tactical training center, the Summit Point Training Campus. Bill had his own explanation for success, “The competitive racing spirit is still there. I want to be so much better than any other business that does our type of training, so that it goes without saying that the best clients will come here. Second place is not an option.” Bill Scott has been a great asset to Jefferson County, the great state of West Virginia, and the Department of Homeland Security of the United States.

Racing was in his blood, and racers were the reason he has been so good to the car club community. Bill enjoyed the company of racers, and was often seen in the paddock talking to drivers about their aspirations, about the track, and telling a few of his own war stories. He was a great friend to Potomac, and to the rest of the car club community in the area.

It’s a sad day to lose a brother and a hero. Thank you for being this and so much more.

Tesla is ramping up hiring for its humanoid robot program, Optimus, including some reinforcement learning engineers.

It was hard to take Tesla Bot seriously when Elon Musk announced it by having someone dressed as a robot dance on stage.

To this day, many people are taking the project seriously, but Tesla certainly is.

The latest demonstration of Tesla Optimus prototypes was way more impressive – giving the project more credibility.

Tesla now has a basement full of humanoid robot prototypes where it is trying to teach them tasks using the same neural net-based strategy as it does for its “Full Self-Driving” system.

Electrek has been tracking job postings for the Optimus and we found that Tesla is ramping up hiring lately.

While previous job postings focused on robotics and building a bipedal robot, the new job postings are often more about how to make the robot useful.

For example, Tesla is looking for a “Reinforcement Learning Engineer, Tesla Bot.” In the job description, Tesla explains what the job entails:

The goal of our reinforcement learning team is to build and demonstrate a general robot learning system that can leverage AI to perform complex physical tasks, ranging from full body locomotion, precise manipulation, and more. Our reinforcement and imitation learning engineers are responsible for end-to-end robotic learning and own this stack from inception to deployment. Most importantly, you will see your work repeatedly shipped to and utilized by thousands of Humanoid Robots in real world applications.

Furthermore, Tesla writes in new job descriptions for “Software Engineer, Robot Software Engineering” that the work will eventually include managing Tesla Bot on the factory floor:

The Robot Software Engineering team is responsible for designing, building, and integrating various types of mobile robots and vehicles to facilitate the movement of people and parts within and between all Tesla facilities worldwide.
This includes the management of AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), Vertical Storage Systems, conveyor system and the potential usage of Tesla Bot on the factory floor.

The automaker has also added a dozen other new job postings related to the program.

While there’s no official timeline for the Optimus robot being available, Tesla has said that it has become a priority, and it plans to soon start using it as part of its own operations to prove usability ahead of a commercial launch.
