The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today exercised its authority by issuing a Standing General Order requiring manufacturers and operators of vehicles equipped with SAE Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) or SAE Levels 3-5 automated driving systems (ADS) to report crashes. This action will enable NHTSA to collect information necessary for the agency to play its role in keeping Americans safe on the roadways, even as the technology deployed on the nation’s roads continues to evolve.

“NHTSA’s core mission is safety. By mandating crash reporting, the agency will have access to critical data that will help quickly identify safety issues that could emerge in these automated systems,” said Dr. Steven Cliff, NHTSA’s Acting Administrator. “In fact, gathering data will help instill public confidence that the federal government is closely overseeing the safety of automated vehicles.”

NHTSA’s order requires covered entities to report crashes that occur on public roads in the United States based on the following:

Within one day of learning of a crash, companies must report crashes involving a Level 2 ADAS or Levels 3-5 ADS-equipped vehicle that also involve a hospital-treated injury, a fatality, a vehicle tow-away, an air bag deployment, or a vulnerable road user such as a pedestrian or bicyclist. An updated report is due 10 days after learning of the crash.
Every month, companies must report all other crashes involving an ADS-equipped vehicle that involve an injury or property damage.
Reports must be updated monthly with new or additional information.
Reports must be submitted for any reportable crash, about which a company receives notice, beginning 10 days after the company is served with the order.
Reports must be submitted to NHTSA electronically using a form that requires important information regarding the crash. NHTSA will use this information to identify crashes for follow-up.
The order requires vehicle and equipment (including software) manufacturers of Level 2 ADAS or Levels 3-5 ADS systems and vehicles and operators of ADS-equipped vehicles to report crashes where the Level 2 ADAS or Level 3-5 ADS system was engaged during or immediately before the crash.
These data will help the agency identify potential safety issues and impacts resulting from the operation of advanced technologies on public roads and increase transparency. Access to ADS data may show whether there are common patterns in driverless vehicle crashes or systematic problems in operation.

Level 2 ADAS is an increasingly common feature on many new vehicles and provides driver assist functions that combine technologies, like lane centering assistance and adaptive cruise control, where the vehicle is able to control certain aspects of steering and speed. Drivers, though, must remain engaged and alert at all times when using these systems, as they are not designed and not able to perform critical operating components of the driving task. ADS-equipped vehicles, which are able to perform the complete driving task in limited circumstances, are not currently sold to consumers but are in limited use on public roads around the country for testing, ride sharing, and goods delivery.

NHTSA’s oversight is not limited to the specified crashes discussed in the order or the information submitted under its reporting obligations. NHTSA’s review and analysis will include all information and incidents relevant to any potential safety defects. Additionally, NHTSA may take further actions on any individual crash, including sending a Special Crash Investigations team and requiring the company to provide additional information. NHTSA may also open defect investigations, as warranted.

NHTSA urges the public to contact us if they think their vehicle may have a safety defect.

Pulling back the curtain
So when we did our shoot for our big RED announcement, we decided it was time to show the world how we do what we do.

On every one of our shoots, we set new challenges for ourselves so we can test a particular workflow, use case, or feature. On this shoot, we were committed to using the V-RAPTOR and V-RAPTOR XL to automatically transmit 8K REDCODE RAW R3D files along with customized CDLs from our DIT, a ProRes proxy file (ProRes LT), a WAV file, and a custom LUT associated with each take directly to the cloud—more than 4TB of 8K REDCODE RAW right to Frame.io—without ever downloading a single media card.

Camera-to-cloud-firmware (article) terabytes

We no longer have to wait for camera cards to be offloaded to get our takes to any of the people who will benefit from having immediate access. Our editor can start cutting while we’re shooting. Producers or other creatives can view and comment on what they’re seeing. We can get elements to a second unit shooting concurrently. Our marketing team can begin activation while the production is still happening. In fact, when we were making the video to announce this new integration, we uploaded more than 2TB of data from the camera directly to the cloud on day one of our shoot and more than 4TB total—without ever downloading a mag or backing up to a local or on-prem medium.

Do-it-yourself 8K

You don’t have to wait for the pros to deliver 8K content if you have a high-end camera or select smartphone. Believe it or not, a number of high-end digital still cameras offer 8K video recording, which you can then watch on your television. The Fujifilm X-H2 mirrorless camera for one, records 8K at 30 frames per second.

The higher the frame rate of the recording, the smoother the video on your 8K TV.

Since little 16K footage exists elsewhere, the firm has produced its own film for Shiseido showing life-size animal wildlife. It has not disclosed the method involved, but has previously achieved what is known as “quad ultra-high definition” footage by using a method called demosaicing. This involves applying an algorithm to 8K footage to deduce what the additional pixels should look like, similar to the way 4K TVs sometimes up-sample 1080p footage.

The biggest 16K screen, 63ft by 17ft (19.2m by 5.4m) Crystal LED installed at a new research centre that has been built for the Japanese cosmetics group Shiseido in the city of Yokohama, south of Tokyo. It is so large it will stretch between the first and second floors and it is longer than a bus.

This chip dedicated to the training of artificial intelligence should allow Tesla vehicles to ensure a semi-autonomous driving thanks to the supercomputer features it has. During the Tesla AI Day that took place on August 19, 2021, the Tesla Dojo D1 chip was unveiled. Presented by the company as having “the computing power of a GPU with the flexibility of a CPU”, it will be dedicated to AI training. The chip was developed entirely in-house and is based on an ASIC platform with 50 billion transistors on a 645mm2 die, all etched at TSMC in 7nm.

The chip will centralize and process all the information provided by the network of cameras and semiconductors to optimize the operation of Autopilot and achieve true 100% autonomous driving, which is the brand’s goal. According to Tesla, the D1 chip develops double the bandwidth of current chips used in networks.

Campaign furniture which is designed to be ‘folded up’ and carried long distances has been a feature of travelling armies over many centuries. With the expansion of the European explorers through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the finest European furniture makers competed to design and produce elegant, ingenious and fashionable knock-down furniture for colonial officers and civilians traveling to these distant provinces.

The administrators and armies of the British Empire in the Indian subcontinent were perhaps the largest consumer of campaign furniture leading to high quality local manufacturing of durable, practical and elegant ‘knock-down’ chairs, tables, desks, bookcases and beds. We have revived this craft using the finest furniture craftsmen and materials to present you with furniture and accessories of a lasting quality which will delight you for a lifetime indoors or outdoors, at home or at your camp.

Jeet and Raj Guram were raised in colonial cantonments all over India where “outdoors” was a way of life and having been exposed to Campaign furniture and field equipment early in life, the business of manufacturing what they knew, possessed and remembered came naturally to them.

Campaign furniture, ingeniously designed, easily knocked down and stacked, elegant, utilitarian, carefully wrought, finely detailed yet robust, was much in use during the Raj when outfitters had shops in remote towns on the Ganges to equip British officers and soldiers travelling by boat from Calcutta to stations as remote as Kabul.

This furniture, integral to the “genteel life abroad” was once manufactured by the legendary houses of Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, Ross and Company of Dublin. Clean, highly polished, stylishly executed, this furniture was once de rigeur in every self respecting British officer’s camp or temporary residence. It lent sumptuousness, aesthetic appeal and a modicum of civilised refinement to the makeshift tent where Raj era officers on the move forcibly lodged for months on end. After all, the practise had a hoary tradition: history tells us Julius Caesar carried parquets of wooden mosaic for his tent floors!

Today a Campaign Furniture staple like the Roorkee Chair has been accorded the status of a design classic: it directly inspired later modern classics like Marcel Breur’s 1925 Wassily Chair, Le Corbusier’s Basculart Chair 1928 and Kaare Klint’s Farmer’s Chair 1966.

Jeet and Raj Guram are descendants of Raja Bhagmal Jat of the royal house of Bithur, who played a defining role in establishing Cawnpore as a trading town in the early 19th century.
With this ancestry they were predisposed to being connoisseurs of both fine art and elegant living of which Campaign Furniture is a supreme exemplar.
