Background
Samsung’s newest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S23 Ultra (from $1,200), boasts 8K video recording at 30 frames per second. That’s an upgrade from 8K at 24 frames per second in the previous year’s model — though once you get into 33-million-pixel file sizes, transferring the video becomes challenging.
Samsung says you can share your 8K video via Wi-Fi or use its Tap or Smart View features to watch it on a Samsung TV.
You can also upload to YouTube using Samsung’s Gallery app, but that comes with a warning. According to Samsung, “the video may take some time to upload due to the file size.”
Camera remote control.
Beneficial camera remote control.
The remote control has infinite remote control, remote control range, and direct viewing distance of 66feet/328feet (upgrade version).
360° infinite rotation, up and down ±35°, the speed is adjustable in 8 levels/9 levels (Upgraded version)!
Support 7 kinds of photography functions! The maximum load-bearing capacity can reach 6Ibs!
Camera capability has become a major focal point for smartphone engineers within the past decade. Year after year, consumers can find major upgrades to smartphone camera capabilities such as an increased number of lenses with all sorts of functional improvements. The new iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max models can shoot video in 4K viewing quality, while the new Samsung S22 Ultra has landed with its new ‘Nightography’ mode, which shoots high-quality video in very low light settings. Technological advances such as these throughout the smartphone industry paired with the convenience of smartphone cameras can begin to beg the question of if smartphone cameras will surpass standard cinematography cameras soon.
With the major increase in video log viewership over the past decade, smartphone engineers have well predicted the need for major upgrades to smartphone camera capabilities and functionality, while making the devices well worth the price. The great portable size of these smartphones paired with the stunningly high-quality camera makes for a strong advocate for using smartphones over standard video production cameras. Regarding pricing, the total cost for a top-tier smartphone with the best-in-market camera ranges between $1500 CDN to $2300 CDN depending on storage size, compared to some cinematic cameras that start from $900 CDN without any substantial storage capability.
In 2018, Oscar-winning film director and cinematographer Steven Soderbergh directed the thriller film Unsane. The movie featured many well-known movie actors such as Claire Foy, Jay Pharoah, Matt Damon, and more. To add to his incredible portfolio of work, Soderbergh has become increasingly known for his avant-garde cinema approach due to his irregular filming methods. Many who watched the film were shocked to find out that the entire 1 hour and 38 minutes of the film was shot using only an iPhone 7 Plus. The film grossed over $14,000,000 USD worldwide.
In 2019, Soderbergh shot another movie using only an iPhone 8 called High Flying Bird which launched on Netflix. Once again, viewers could not even tell that the film had been shot using a smartphone. In an interview with IndieWire, Soderbergh mentioned that the size and portability of the iPhone gave him the ability to shoot the difficult angles and tight spaces he was looking to capture for the film.
Realistically, the majority of films cannot only be shot on smartphones but a case is being made for new and unconventional methods of shooting film. There are some clear advantages to using a smaller device and requiring fewer attachments while being able to get harder to obtain angles throughout the filming process. As smartphones continue to gain upgrades over time, who knows what upgrades will be invented and when the smartphone camera can perhaps overtake regular camera filming!
GoPro cameras are mostly marketed for outdoor videography and photography. These cameras were originally marketed for recording yourself performing outdoor activities. You can strap a GoPro to your helmet and film yourself skiing or cycling.
The GoPro also comes with waterproof housing. It can survive depths up to 10 meters. The rugged design also allows it to survive drops that would destroy most DSLR cameras and smartphones.
Due to the features of the GoPro, it can be used for filming almost anything. You can create documentaries, interview people, start a vlog, or make independent films.

Red Camera
Today, the Frame.io Camera to Cloud in-camera integrations with the RED V-RAPTOR, V-RAPTOR XL become officially available. The significance of this step toward a more creatively collaborative cloud-first workflow compels me to reflect a little on what’s gotten us here—and about how that influences what lies ahead.
Twelve years ago, David Fincher made The Social Network. It was the first movie shot with a RED ONE camera equipped with the Mysterium-X sensor and the company I founded, Light Iron, handled the digital intermediate and finishing. After that project, David asked what it would take to be able to automatically capture and playback timecode-accurate clips transmitted from within the camera without having to download first—which, at the time, was a completely new concept.
V-RAPTOR™ XL 8K VV expands upon the most powerful and advanced RED® camera platform ever. Using RED’s new flagship sensor, V-RAPTOR XL leverages the industry proven V-RAPTOR™ 8K VV sensor inside of a large-scale-production ready XL camera body.
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
V-RAPTOR XL is designed to support high-end television and motion picture productions as well as any filmmaker who requires an all-in-one solution.
Dual voltage battery support offers compatibility with a wide range of common batteries found on set today, both 14 V batteries and high voltage 26 V V-Lock or Gold Mount options.
12 V and 24 V auxiliary power outputs allows camera assistants to power all the peripherals needed to do their job from one centralized place.
Front facing 3G-SDI and 2-Pin 12 V power, as well as compatibility with the DSMC3™ RED® Touch 7.0” LCD, supports any camera operators viewing preference.
Wireless timecode, genlock, and camera control, as well as four SDI outputs support the DIT, giving them access to everything they need at their cart.
Built-in electronic ND allows cinematographers to precisely select their density in ¼, 1/3, and full stop increments, providing never before seen exposure and depth of field control inside a cinema camera of this level.
Additionally, the V-RAPTOR/V-RAPTOR™ XL and the DSMC3 platform features advanced connectivity solutions which enable applications such as RED Connect for 8K R3D cinematic live streaming and remote record, remote control and monitoring, in-camera Frame.io integration, AWS direct upload, and more.

V-RAPTOR 8K
Featuring the same groundbreaking multi-format 8K sensor found inside the compact and modular V-RAPTOR body, the V-RAPTOR XL 8K VV has the ability to shoot 8K large format or 6K S35, unlocking the largest lens selection of any comparable camera on the market while allowing shooters the ability to always capture at over 4K.
The sensor also boasts the highest recorded dynamic range and cleanest shadow performance of any RED camera. In addition, the V-RAPTOR sensor scan time is 2x faster than any previous RED camera and it allows users to capture up to 600 fps at 2K.
V-RAPTOR XL will also continue to feature RED’s proprietary REDCODE RAW codec, allowing users to capture 16-bit RAW, and leverage RED’s latest IPP2 workflow and color management.
Pulling back the curtain
So when we did our shoot for our big RED announcement, we decided it was time to show the world how we do what we do.
On every one of our shoots, we set new challenges for ourselves so we can test a particular workflow, use case, or feature. On this shoot, we were committed to using the V-RAPTOR and V-RAPTOR XL to automatically transmit 8K REDCODE RAW R3D files along with customized CDLs from our DIT, a ProRes proxy file (ProRes LT), a WAV file, and a custom LUT associated with each take directly to the cloud—more than 4TB of 8K REDCODE RAW right to Frame.io—without ever downloading a single media card.
Camera-to-cloud-firmware (article) terabytes
We no longer have to wait for camera cards to be offloaded to get our takes to any of the people who will benefit from having immediate access. Our editor can start cutting while we’re shooting. Producers or other creatives can view and comment on what they’re seeing. We can get elements to a second unit shooting concurrently. Our marketing team can begin activation while the production is still happening. In fact, when we were making the video to announce this new integration, we uploaded more than 2TB of data from the camera directly to the cloud on day one of our shoot and more than 4TB total—without ever downloading a mag or backing up to a local or on-prem medium.
What we did that day was a technological first. But what’s more relevant is why we did it—and what it means to our industry over the next few years and beyond.
The V-RAPTOR XL system expands on the most advanced RED® platform ever, leveraging the current V-RAPTOR 8K VV+ 6K S35 multi-format sensor inside an XL camera body that is ready for large-scale production. The all-new unified XL body is designed to support high-end film and television production.
Revar Cine Mini RED V-RAPTOR
Up to 8K Capture
A wide range of resolutions and frame rates enables the V-RAPTOR 8K S35 to capture up to 120 fps in 8K, 240 fps in UHD 4k, and 480 fps in 2K, with anamorphic options available in 6K, 7K, and 8K. The 8K resolution provides the ability to crop multiple shots in a lower resolution from a single 8K take
Do-it-yourself 8K
You don’t have to wait for the pros to deliver 8K content if you have a high-end camera or select smartphone. Believe it or not, a number of high-end digital still cameras offer 8K video recording, which you can then watch on your television. The Fujifilm X-H2 mirrorless camera for one, records 8K at 30 frames per second.
The higher the frame rate of the recording, the smoother the video on your 8K TV.
Since little 16K footage exists elsewhere, the firm has produced its own film for Shiseido showing life-size animal wildlife. It has not disclosed the method involved, but has previously achieved what is known as “quad ultra-high definition” footage by using a method called demosaicing. This involves applying an algorithm to 8K footage to deduce what the additional pixels should look like, similar to the way 4K TVs sometimes up-sample 1080p footage.
The biggest 16K screen, 63ft by 17ft (19.2m by 5.4m) Crystal LED installed at a new research centre that has been built for the Japanese cosmetics group Shiseido in the city of Yokohama, south of Tokyo. It is so large it will stretch between the first and second floors and it is longer than a bus.
63ft by 17ft (19.2m by 5.4m) Crystal LED screen
The development was announced by Sony at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show, Sony had previously designed a separate 16K display, but that looked like it was made up of dozens of smaller screens rather than presenting a single seamless picture.
The new “super-size” Crystal LED installation can be fitted together without any visible gaps to create the impression of being a single screen.
